      National School Lunch Program

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in more than 98,000 public and nonprofit private schools and residential childcare institutions in the United States. Federal assistance allows a reimbursable meal, depending on family income, to be offered at no charge, reduced charge and full paid meal price. The meal pattern for lunch provides one-third of the recommended daily allowance for children. The meal price for reduced price student can be no more that 40 cents. The full paid student and district staff is established yearly by the school system and approved by the local school board

Each school system participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program is required to provide an application to each student in the school district. Eligibility is determined based on family income. Families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty level are eligible for free meals; families with income between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level are eligible for reduced price meals; and families with income over 185 percent of the poverty level pay full student price for meals.

  History

In 1934, Father Jimmy Byrnes opened Little Flower Catholic School: a one-room building behind the church in which three Sisters of St. Joseph taught.  These sisters lived at St. Patrick’s and traveled to the school each day in a taxi. Over the years, the parish continued to grow as did the number of grades served by the school.  The building of a new school on the corner of Glenwood began in 1940 and was dedicated in 1945.  The sisters who taught at the school resided on the second floor. Due to rapidly increasing enrollment, a new building (known as the Annex) was constructed in 1944. This building still stands, and is known as the “West Wing.”   In 1954, enrollment had grown to seven hundred thirty-two students for grades one through eight.  The staff consisted of twelve teaching Sisters and three lay teachers. In 1958, a Kindergarten program was added and in 1964 a gymnasium was built.  It was not until 1987 that the three and four year old Pre School program was added.

By the year 2000, sixty-five years after the opening of Little Flower Catholic School, two hundred twenty students were enrolled and the staff consisted of, one Sister of St. Joseph, twenty lay teachers, three cafeteria personnel, and two custodians.   Enrollment fluctuated up and down over the next five years.  At the end of the 2004-2005 school year, the principal, Sister Mary Joyce Bringer, retired.  For the first time in its seventy-one years of service to the community there would not be a Sister of St. Joseph on the teaching staff.

The spirit of education, first sparked by Fr. Jimmy Byrnes is continued by the current pastor and the school and church communities. Quality education programs are offered in a Jesus-centered environment where all students - Little Flower parishioners, students from parishes, and non-Catholic students, can grow. The teachings of Christ continue to provide the basis for the curriculum and policies of the school, and permeates all that we do.

During the 2009-2010 school year we will proudly celebrate the 75 birthday of Little Flower Catholic School.
